spelling and reading

My nine year old has difficulty with spelling and finds reading an effort.

There are many reasons why children struggle with literacy development but the most frequent causes are language based. An assessment by a speech pathologist can ascertain if any underlying language or speech sound awareness difficulties account for these reading and spelling difficulties.

HINT

  • Focus on the positives and praise your child for the things they do well.
  • Continue to read to your child and give her the opportunity to read a page or two to you.
  • Play word games (word searches, crosswords, scrabble, hangman, boggle).
  • When you make a grocery list get your child to write it down as you dictate the items.
  • Encourage writing – poems, holiday journals and stories.
