Speech Pathology Services for Children

All parents want their children to be happy and to achieve to their maximum potential in all areas. A baby's first word is an eagerly anticipated event for parents. However when a child does not pass these all-important speech and language milestones at the appropriate age, concern replaces anticipation. Well- meaning friends and relatives may suggest that the child will simply 'grow out' of the problem.

This is not always the case. Early assessment and intervention is vital to ensure that children achieve their maximum potential in communication development. It also helps alleviate some of the associated difficulties of communication break-down such as frustration, withdrawal and socialisation difficulties.

The Speech Care team is experienced in dealing with children. We know how to make them feel comfortable and to make therapy fun.

What to expect when you attend a speech pathology appointment:
The child and his parents/ caregiver attend together. Your child is provided with some interesting toys and activities while the speech pathologist asks you some questions about the questionnaire you have filled in about your child’s history (developmental, medical, educational, social and family) and finds out about your specific concerns for your child. To download the questionnaire go to the download section of the website.

The focus then changes to the child. At all times he/she is made to feel comfortable and at ease. Assessment tasks are done in a fun way and lots of positive reinforcement is provided.

Following assessment, a report is prepared which includes recommendations. If therapy is recommended, session times are organized and you and your child return for the follow-up appointments.

Therapy sessions are fun and the emphasis is on achieving therapy goals using games and play-based techniques as much as possible.
Home practice is strongly recommended and these activities will be explained thoroughly during the session. We encourage you to ask questions if at any stage you are unclear about any aspect of the assessment or therapy programme
